Fogo Island Inn Receives Prestigious 2013 Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award

Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada, has won the Travel + Leisure 2013 Global Vision Award in the category of ‘Culture.’ The 15 honorees of the publication’s various categories exemplify responsible tourism and are trailblazers and a powerful force in promoting sustainability and mindfulness of the earth’s precious resources.

The Inn is recognized for its continued support of the local community through the embodiment of Fogo Island’s 400 year culture, from locally sourced and foraged ingredients to hand-crafted quilts and furniture built on the Island. Under the leadership of the Shorefast Foundation, one of the main goals of the Inn is to aid the Island’s economy and promote sustainable growth. Knowledgeable and hospitable Island ambassadors provide guests with truly memorable Fogo Island experiences through its Community Host Program in which local culture is shared and celebrated – from interpretation of the Island’s significant history and practice of cod fishing, to the hand-crafting of the traditional punt, the small wooden boat which was the workhorse of the inshore fishery.

Says Zita Cobb, President of Shorefast Foundation, under which the Fogo Island Inn is operated: “We are especially pleased to be recognized in the culture category. Traditional cultures around the world are being flattened or, at best, are under unprecedented pressure. One of the key goals of our projects and our Inn is find ways to hold on to the important knowledge and way of knowing that has emerged from 400 years of lived experience here at the edge of the continent. And more than just hold on…but to also find ways to adapt and to be relevant to the contemporary globalized world; as we say, to find new ways with old things.”

ABOUT THE AWARDS
