Prince Edward Island 2014 Celebrations
Prince Edward Island and all of Canada will celebrate an important chapter in our history in 2014, when the province celebrates the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference – where the idea of Canada as a nation was proposed.
Prince Edward Island will host a spectacular year-long tribute to the beginning of this great country and welcomes visitors to join the festivities. Part of downtown Charlottetown will be turned into a “celebration zone” where visitors can follow the steps of the Fathers of Confederation, and experience daily concerts, food tastings, children’s activities, and historical presentations. Each province and territory in Canada will have the opportunity to showcase their local food, culture and history, making this a truly Canadian celebration.
To provide a flavour of the Island scene 150 years ago, The Confederation Players will be roaming the streets of Charlottetown, itching to discuss colonial politics and debate the merits of a union. Be ready to talk “sesquicentennial” with this troupe of “conference delegates” who have somehow escaped the past to join us in the 21st century.
Other plans include showcases sharing the food, culture and heritage from across Canada and celebration sites with nightly entertainment, food tastings and daily family-friendly fun.
