Travel to Newfoundland & Labrador for the Sound Symposium

Tooters, timers and orchestral ships – join Newfoundland and Labrador as they celebrate the 30th annual Sound Symposium.

From July 4 to 12, St. John’s will host over 100 guest musicians, sound sculptors, dancers, poets and actors to create a truly unique experience for travellers and locals alike. Even the ships berthed in the harbour will join in the musical festival with the Harbour Symphony.

Every day at 12:30 for the nine-day festival, a specially trained crew of timer and tooter volunteers climb aboard the ships and wait for the countdown signalled by the Coast Guard before the ships sound their horns to music. Each piece lasts for around seven minutes as the timers and tooters play famous scores of music to perfection. Up to eight ships could be performing at any one time.

The Sound Symposium offers something for everyone, with evening jazz, classical and contemporary music concerts and collective jamming at The Ship Pub. Workshops offer the chance to learn something new or discover a hidden talent, while ‘quiet music’ sessions allow festival goers to head in to a secret wine bar, the lounge of a St. John’s resident, or a darkened club to enjoy acoustic music.
