Newfoundland and Labrador Sees Bumper Iceberg Season

Visitors from around the world are flocking to Atlantic Canada following reports of an extraordinary iceberg watching season.

Hundreds of bergs, some as high as 200 feet and as old as 10,000 years, are making their way down from Greenland to Iceberg Alley, along the coastline of Newfoundland and Labrador. As a result, now is the best time for tourists to see this spectacular sight; a grand procession of icebergs, which appear in colour from snow-white to the deepest aquamarine.

The viewing season traditionally runs from April through to late July; however locals are predicting that this year’s bumper season could even stretch through August.

St. Anthony, on the northern tip of Newfoundland and Labrador, has witnessed one of the greatest increases in icebergs. The coastal community typically sees eight to 12 icebergs during the the season; however locals and tourists are currently enjoying double that number, seeing on average 20 to 25 icebergs along this stretch of coastline.

Newfoundland and Labrador continues to hold a reputation as one of the best spots in the world for viewing icebergs and sees thousands of tourists each year take in these glacial giants by tour boat and sea kayak. There’s even a website www.IcebergFinder.com that plots the bergs on a map so tourists can identify where best to see these magnificent bergs as they travel through Iceberg Alley.

Not only is this influx of icebergs good news for tourists, but also for local businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador, which use plentiful icebergs to produce specialised products such as iceberg water, vodka, gin and rum.
