Prince Edward Island Named IAGTO’s Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year 2011 – January 2011
The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) has named Prince Edward Island as the 2011 Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year. The announcement, which headlined the organisation’s annual Awards Gala Dinner in Valencia earlier this month, confirms that the Island is one of the worlds golfing gems. Prince Edward Island won the 2011 title beating six other finalists, including Bulgaria, Colombia, Iceland, Mississippi, and Sweden
Prince Edward Island is part of Atlantic Canada, which also includes Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Set in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Island is only a 4 hour drive from Halifax in Nova Scotia.
The Island features thirty two top-rated courses designed by renowned architects including Graham Cooke, Robbie Robinson, Les Furber, Thomas McBroom, Jeff Fuller, Stanley Thompson, William G. Robinson, Rob Heaslip, and the team of Dr Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Each of the courses has its own distinct character, layout, design and are all within thirty minutes of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island’s capital city. Whether looking for links golf, river golf, or woodland or parkland courses, Prince Edward Island offers it all.
Prince Edward Island is an undiscovered golf haven where a trip to the beach takes less than fifteen minutes in any direction. As well as being speckled with golf courses the Island is a collage of historic traditions, culinary delights, festivals, recreational pursuits, performing arts, and artisan craftwork. In recent years, Prince Edward Island, along with the other Atlantic Canada provinces has earned an international reputation among foodies for incredible seafood and other culinary wonders and above all, the hospitality of the locals is unmatched.
“Prince Edward Island’s compact geography is a perfect option for those who want to minimise travel and maximise the destination experience. Golfers can comfortably get in 36 holes and still take advantage of a wide array of après golf activities. It truly is the complete golf destination”, said Barry MacLeod, Chief Operating Officer for Golf Prince Edwards Island.
