PEI 2014 – Celebrating a Significant Chapter in Canadian History

It is not too soon to start thinking about ways to join in Prince Edward Island’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 2014 – because you are all invited! Year-long and province-wide, the events will show off PEI at its celebratory best. The kick-off promises to be a “show-starter,” with fireworks and festivities to set the year off in a celebratory mood. While Canada Day and the July 1st weekend have always been significant in the PEI events calendar, look for the 2014 version to be extra fun and special. Who doesn’t love Prince Edward Island in summer? The summer of 2014 will go down in history as a season that delivers all the favourite festivals but with extra elements that will continue to remind us that great ideas and hospitality go hand in hand in PEI.

To provide a flavour of the Island scene 150 years ago, The Confederation Players will be roaming the streets of Charlottetown, itching to discuss colonial politics and debate the merits of a union. Be ready to talk “sesquicentennial” with this troupe of “conference delegates” who have somehow escaped the past to join us in the 21st century.

Other plans include provincial or regional showcases sharing the food, culture and heritage from other regions in Canada and celebration sites with nightly entertainment, food tastings and daily family-friendly fun.

Finally at year end, join our send-off event complete with fireworks, entertainment, and a retrospective of the year’s celebrations. Keep an eye on www.pei2014.ca for more details!
