PGA Golf Tour to visit Nova Scotia

Atlantic Canada is celebrating after it was announced that Canada’s PGA Tour will return after a 12 year hiatus. Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island will host the tour’s penultimate event, titled ‘Cape Breton Celtic Classic’ at The Lakes Golf Club from 2-8 September 2013 before the final in London, Ontario.

Cape Breton Island is joined to mainland Nova Scotia by a short causeway and is fast evolving into one of the world’s premier golf destinations with over 30 quality courses offering stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Its newest course, Cabot Links, opened in 2012 to critical acclaim and has recently been named as one of the top 100 courses in the world by U.S. based GOLF Magazine. Sitting at #82, it’s the highest ranking of any course in Canada. The owners are already clearing land on dramatic clifftops for a second course, Cabot Cliffs, expected to open in 2015.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward Island is home to more than 30 top-ranking courses; ten per cent of the best championship courses in Canada. What’s more, most of the island’s courses are within an hour of each other, ensuring golfers spend their time on the green and not in the car. The world-class greens have also hosted Masters like Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus.

Neighbouring New Brunswick also has scenic and memorable golf courses with stunning shorelines and forested fairways. The Algonquin Golf Course and Academy is listed as one of the top 100 courses in Canada and boasts Canada’s oldest clubhouse, originally constructed in 1894. Situated on the shores of Passamaquoddy Bay, the 18-hole, par 72-course is designed by award-winning architect Thomas McBroom.

Over 20 golf courses can be found in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, with many located in areas of outstanding natural beauty. There are courses to suit all abilities from beginner to advanced. Take a swing on a hilltop course with a view of the historical capital city of St. John’s and the Atlantic Ocean or play a round under the northern lights in Labrador.

The inaugural season of PGA Tour Canada kicked off in British Colombia earlier this month and will play across the country finishing in September with more details to be announced at a later date.
